Daily requirements for vitamin D are now understood to be around or higher 800–1000 IU. Larger doses are needed if you are already Vitamin D deficient. For a moderate deficiency 15–25 nmol/L oral supplementation with 3000–5000 IU daily for 6–12 weeks is recommended to be used to replete stores followed up with a maintenance dose of 1000–2000 IU per day. It is a good idea to assess Vitamin D status every 3–4 months after commencing supplementation because Vitamin D is stored in fat and muscle and there is a delay before normalisation of serum concentrations are seen.
