Men experiencing Hair Thinning from Male Pattern Thinning (MPT), commonly misinterpret naturally falling hairs as hair loss. Hair Loss and Hair Fall are signs something is not right in your body and has interrupted your hair cycle.
Male Pattern Hair Loss or Male Pattern Thinning is clinically called Androgenic Alopecia (AGA), and for a reason; Male Pattern Hair Loss or Male Pattern Thinning is the result of hormones (Androgens) and a genetic (hereditary) predisposition, hence the name. Androgenic Alopecia (also known as androgenetic alopecia or alopecia androgenetica) is a medical condition that is the most common cause of Hair Loss in Men.
Male Pattern Hair Loss has a classic pattern of baldness. Hair will thin in a well-defined ‘typical’ pattern. The pattern of thinning can begin above the temples, at the recessions, through the top and at the crown of the scalp or in a combination of locations. Male pattern Hair Loss is a gradual ‘thinning’ of the effected hairs. It is NOT actual ‘Hair Loss’.
Men who have MPT lose hair through thinning because your hair follicles have been programmed to become sensitive to the changing hormonal activity in your scalp at a predetermined hair cycle, it is your genetic predisposition. Specific hair follicles in the Male Pattern Thinning area will become sensitive to your naturally occurring hormones.
Research has proven that Male Pattern Hair Loss is related to hormones called androgens, particularly an androgen called Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Androgens are important for normal male sexual development before birth and during puberty. Androgens also have other important functions, such as regulating hair growth and sex drive. Male pattern hair loss is caused by a genetic sensitivity of hair follicles to DHT, which causes the hair follicle to shrink or “miniaturize”. A percentage of your testosterone is converted by 5‑alpha reductase to DHT which binds to the androgen receptors around the growing hair bulb. The DHT restricts blood carrying nutrients and oxygen, from reaching the hair bulb. Over time this effect prevents the hair bulb from maturing to a full size hair.
A mature hair is termed a ‘Terminal Hair’ A miniaturized hair as a result of damage from DHT is termed a ‘Vellus Hair’. DHT will cause your terminal hair to gradually shrink to vellus hairs resulting in the appearance of a thinning of hairs in the effected locations on the scalp.
