This Covid-19 is responsible for changing our lives on so many levels and now, for those who have made it through, and are recovering, some are experiencing post Covid-19 symptoms with one reported to be hair loss with lots of news and media coverage about Covid-19 and post Covid-19 hair loss reports. I wanted to make you aware to be careful navigating through the information as there are some suggestions on treatment that can make the hair loss worse. Hair loss can get worse and increase when treating the wrong thing and not looking at the individual reasons why the hair loss occurring only in some and not all people.

Trichology has a few ways to describe this type of hair loss, telogen effluvium or diffuse hair loss. What this means is the hair is falling out of the normal hair cycle, diffusely over the scalp, the hair loss is not in patterns or patches as in other types of hair thinning and hair loss.

We all have a hair cycle, every hair on our head is in a cycle of either growing, resting, or falling, this happens without your control. Telogen phase of the hair cycle, we lose between 70-160 hairs every day diffusely over the head, this is normal and required for hair growth. If there is a disturbance in the body, such as fever, medication, deficiency, thyroid or adrenal imbalance and stress (stress alone does not cause hair loss), it can cause the hairs in the anagen growing phase of the hair cycle to prematurely enter the telogen falling phase, diffuse hair loss is the result. Diffuse hair loss or telogen effluvium results in up to double the normal daily hair loss which can look like hair loss of over 300 hairs a day, it is scary.
Diffuse hair loss or telogen effluvium Post Covid-19 hair loss, will occur 3 months after the body disturbance, it takes three months for the hair to be released presenting as diffuse hair loss. Once the hair loss starts it will fall for three months, you cannot stop this hair loss, but we can help to slow the hair loss and help with hair regrowth sooner than would happen on its own. When the cause has already taken place and is in the past, you cannot stop the process. The hair loss should cease after three months, then it should come back to its normal hair cycle and regrow within a 12 months’ time frame.
